West End Primary School and Nursery

Be Your West End Best

Literacy

Literacy has two aspects:

  • Reading
  • Writing

Literacy at West End is approached through practical, inspiring activities.

Throughout the EYFS, we develop the child's reading skills through the enjoyment of a variety of stories and rhymes.

We teach phonics following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds scheme and enhance this by encouraging children to use both reading and writing in their play.  For more information about Little Wandle, click here: Little Wandle guide for parents

In Reception, children will be provided with reading material which directly link to their phonic knowledge through e-books.  They will also come home with physical reading books which support consolidation of their phonic knowledge.

In addition, all children in Nursery and Reception are encouraged to choose books for themselves from the class library. These are intended to be read with the child, to support reading further.

We value all children's mark making and strive to give each child the confidence to see them self as a writer in a range of practical contexts.
