West End Primary School and Nursery

Be Your West End Best

Inclusion and SEND provision

Inclusion

At West End Primary School we provide education for all pupils through a variety of access strategies including, appropriate differentiation, resources and facilities as necessary. All pupils’ individual needs are considered and a full range of flexible responses are available to accommodate and value their diversity.

All pupils are entitled to receive, within a suitable peer group, a broad balanced and relevant curriculum. The school will, within the context of services available, seek the relevant support and advice from the LEA, in order to facilitate pupils’ inclusion.

This does not mean that we will treat all learners in the same way, but that we will respond to learners in ways which take account of their varied life experiences and needs.

We believe that educational inclusion is about equal opportunities for all learners, whatever their age, gender, ethnicity, impairment, attainment and background. We pay particular attention to the provision for and the achievement of different groups of learners.

SEND Provision

If you have any questions or queries about the Special Education Needs and Disability provision at West End, please speak to your child's class teacher or the Inclusion Coordinator, Helen Dillon.

The SEND policy can be found in the Policies section of this website.

Transition for SEND Pupils

When the time comes for our pupils with SEND to move on from our school we are here to support the process.  We are able to advise and support parents to make decisions about the best educational setting for the next stage in their child's journey.  We work closely with the receiving school to share information, to ensure we are able to support our children to make a positive start.  This might include additional visits to the setting, new staff meeting the pupil in our school or a unit of work to help them to build the skills needed for transition.  If necessary we liaise with further professionals to help the process.

Horsforth Children's Services

School work in partnership with Horsforth Children's Services to support our young people and their families.  If you would like additional support please contact school inclusion@westendprimary.org.uk or contact HCS directly: 0113 3367724.

Mindmate

MindMate Leeds is the name for all the different ways children and young people in the city can get support with their mental health and wellbeing. This website is an information hub about support services, advice and information on common issues, self help guidance, plus young people’s stories and experiences. They have a great website with a dedicated hub to answer questions about neurodiversity.  It can be accessed here: https://mindmate.org.uk/neurodiversity-information-hub/

Parent and Carer coffee mornings

Daisy Chain parent coffee morning sessions are for parents and carers of children who
display traits associated with, or have a diagnosis of, a neurodevelopmental
condition including: autism, sensory processing, attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD), or Foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). A diagnosis is not
needed. Please see the link for more information

Autism Awareness

Did you know that one in in every 36 school pupils are autistic?

That means that our school children will be learning, playing and living in communities with autistic children and adults.

Every year in school we run a series of Autism Awareness Assemblies, followed up back in class with activities to build understanding and tolerance.

Please see the links below for activities you can do at home to help your child to learn about Autism and better understand their classmates.

Early Years Children might like to watch this special episode of Daisy and Ollie 'How do I make friends with Theo?   Afterwards talk to your child about how they could make friends with Theo.  If you would like more information a resource pack can be found below.

Older children can watch this film - The Trummiesthere are links to a resource pack for more ideas of how to answer your children's questions about Autism.  Please take a look at this poster which helps children to understand how to help make our school more Autism Friendly.
