Music

We aim to foster children's sensitivity to and enjoyment of music through listening, composing and performing. Key concepts we develop in music are pitch, duration, dynamics, timbre, tempo, texture and structure. The children develop knowledge, skills and and an understanding of music and an appreciation of its importance in different cultures.

The children have lots of different opportunities to sing and play at school. We have regular whole school musical assemblies, class assemblies where children showcase their skills and an annual young musician's concert.  We also join with other schools to perform in Leeds City musical events.  Our commitment and excellence in singing has been rewarded with the Sing up Gold level award.

We  want all our children to leave us in Year 6 with the skills to take part in musical activities.  Curriculum enrichment is a cornerstone of this aim and further raises children's enjoyment and engagement. In school time we have our choir, band and recorder club as well after school options to learn instruments. All children from Year 4 upwards are taught to play the ukulele as part of their music sessions. We also facilitate additional lessons with peripatetic music teachers, from Leeds Music Service who provide optional extra tuition in woodwind, strings and brass.

Rocksteady

Rocksteady is the UK’s leading rock school and we’re proud that their inclusive and fun band lessons now take place in our school. As well as teaching new musical skills through contemporary rock and pop music, Rocksteady have a proven significant, positive impact on wellbeing, confidence, and life skills for primary aged children and recently they were awarded ‘Schools Wellbeing Resource of the Year’ at the Education Today awards, for their work inspiring children through music. During lessons, children can choose to play either vocals, electric guitar, drums, bass, or keyboards in their very own band. All the instruments are provided, and no musical experience is necessary. The staff have even had a go too, so we can really say that no experience is required!

Rocksteady recently performed an Autumn concert for their classmates and parents which was a huge success: I know everyone is eagerly anticipating the same in Spring and Summer.

Young Voices

Mrs Yeadon has been running an after-school choir club on Monday, and all their hard work culminated in a stunning performance at Sheffield Arena as part of the 'Young Voices' children's choir where over 5,000 students from across the country came together to perform. They were led by a fantastic conductor, accompanied by brilliant musicians and everyone who attended had an amazing time singing and dancing including the children, parents and teachers. This unique live-music experience is one they will never forget!
