Be Your West End Best

Art

Art and design provide strong and purposeful links across all curriculum subjects and within the themes being explored in the classroom. Children experiment with and then learn to master a wide range of media and tools.  The children learn about artists, craft workers and designers and respond thoughtfully and imaginatively to ideas, images and objects of many kinds and from many cultures. (For more information on art in the curriculum, please see our school prospectus.)

We also offer the children the opportunity to express their artistic talents and interests at extracurricular art clubs, which run after school.

Year 4 visited Leeds Art Gallery and took part in a 'Sketchbook' Workshop. They made their own sketchbooks and became art detectives. Year 4 showcased their sketching skills and ability to discuss art and their interpretations. They also spotted an Antony Gormley maquette for the Leeds Brick Man, 1986

Year 4 researched Antony Gormley's sculptures and, after creating maquettes and practising pinching, slabbing and coiling, created their own roman soliders.

Year 1 have been looking at and being inspired by Karen Lederer whose approach to colour is intuitive and her approach to printmaking is experimental and painterly

Year 1 explored public artist, Olga Ziemska's sculptures and were inspired to create their own wired sculptures using additional natural materials.

Year 2 have been exploring the work of illistrator, Beth Krommes. They used her work to inspire them to create their own blue whale illistrations..

Horsforth Walk of Art

West End School takes part in this big community project in July. We exhibited works of art that had been completed over the previous year in locations around the town. The window displays look fabulous and we had lots of positive feedback
