West End Primary School and Nursery

Be Your West End Best

Growth Mindset

We foster growth mindset in the children.  We encourage them to celebrate mistakes as a key to learning.

Each class displays a learning line which children and adults use to discuss the learning journey and how it has pitfalls before the highs of success.

Children in school are encouraged to change the mindset of "I can't do it." to "I can't do it yet!"

I’m not good at this

What am I missing?

I give up

I’ll use a different strategy

It’s good enough

Is this really my best work?

I can’t make this any better

I can always improve

This is too hard

This may take some time

I made a mistake

Mistakes help me learn

I just can’t do this

I am going to train my brain

I’ll never be that smart

I will learn how to do this

Plan A didn’t work

There is always Plan B

My friend can do it

I will learn from them

We are very proud to be a mindmate friendly school!

 This accreditation from Leeds City Council acknowledges the work which we put in to support children's mental health and wellbeing.
To become a mindmate friendly school you must:
have strong links with families and wider professionals;
know children as individuals ensuring that their views and opinions are heard and valued and heard;
Develop health and wellbeing throughout the curriculum for all children;
Provide additional nurture and social and emotional interventions.

Investors in Pupils

 We are very proud at West End to have the Investors in Pupils accreditation. We were delighted with our wonderful Report from the assessor.

Investors in Pupils builds on the principles of Investors in People, at its heart is pupil voice and pupil participation.

 Investors in Pupils helps pupils find out about their school, the jobs of everyone in it and that the school has a budget.  It supports them in setting targets for the class and for themselves whilst recognising the importance of the roles and responsibilities of everyone involved in their education, and how they as pupils can make a difference.

At West End we agree a class code, mission statement and work on personal targets all year round from Nursery through to Y6. We ensure our classrooms, inside and out, are the best they can be for productive learning by sharing the responsibility of managing its day to day running. Each child has an active role in the class from, Attendance Officials through to ICT Technicians. We regularly take pupil feedback through surveys, discussion, circle times and of course our active Student Council.

This year we have introduced more Pupil Voice initiatives by creating additional teams to lead on important areas of school life. We have Digital Leaders, Mathematics Mentors, Art Councillors, PE and Sports Leaders and Eco Warriors. Each of these groups has representatives from across school playing a leading role in moving this area of school life forward.  Pupil participation is one of our top priorities and we pride ourselves on having a fully inclusive child led curriculum that inspires and enthuses our young people.
