Be Your West End Best

What is the geography of our local area?

We seek to inspire the children to be curious about the world they inhabit; countries and people, physical environments and natural resources. Through their exploration and understanding of the incredible world we live in, the children learn about how the world is connected and how dependant we are on our fragile planet.

At West End, every child is a geographer and our skill based geography curriculum allows children to develop knowledge of places both near and far, making and using maps, with maps, atlases, globes and online resources and maps forming an integral part of the classroom environment. Children learn how to analyse why features are where they are and the impact that they have on the wider environment. Their responsibility and role in looking after the planet they share with others underpins our curriculum wherever possible.

We linked our topic of The Amazon Rainforest and South America to our Geography objective,to be able to draw a birds eye view map with a key. Starling Class enjoyed a walk through the local area and Hunger Hills. We looked at the difference between our local woodland and the Amazon Rainforest. As we walked, the children mapped out the route and then created a key to show what symbols were.
