Stephen Lawrence
Diversity and Equality Week
We had lots of fun during our Diversity and Equality week and learned some very important messages about how to treat people the same no matter where they come from, what they look like or what they believe in.
We had an action-packed week! It started with Mrs Yeadon telling us all about Stephen Lawrence, a boy who was killed because of the colour of his skin, and then our anti-bullying ambassadors helped us all to make pledges to treat each other fairly.
Lots of parents and friends of West End visited us to tell us about their diverse life experiences:
- Yusuf Sozi (a man who went to school with Stephen Lawrence) talked to the older children about his memories of Stephen.
- Aaliya Rajam talked to Y1 about her culture, heritage and language.
- Mandeep Virdee talked to Y2 about his family and working life.
- William Rachman showed a presentation to KS2 about his experiences of life in South Africa during apartheid.
- Some visitors from the Red Cross told us all about their work in helping others across the world.
- We all had lots of fun when Mariesa Martire led Zumba workshops for all classes.
(A big thank you to everyone!)
During the week, Turquoise Class performed their assembly to the rest of school about the life of Martin Luther King, and children in all classes learned about role models throughout history and shared stories that promoted fairness.
Mrs Whitham had a very busy week, teaching African drumming in music lessons, as well teaching us lots of songs about equality and the importance of friendship in our singing assemblies.
Our week ended with a balloon launch, organised by our school council. Every class wrote a message of equality and released them into the community. We hope to hear from our neighbours soon...
